## Short answer

- For a .com, the cheapest long-term price usually comes from a registrar that charges the same every year, not the one with the loudest $1 offer.
- Cheap extensions such as .xyz and .online often cost a couple of dollars in year one and many times more at renewal.
- Before you buy, find three numbers: what you pay today, the renewal price per year, and the transfer-out price.
- A newly registered domain generally can't be transferred away for the first 60 days, so you can't buy cheap and leave next week.

## The first-year price is not the price

A domain is a yearly cost for as long as you keep the site, so the renewal price matters more than the first-year price. Registrars know this and advertise the promotional first-year rate loudest.

The table below shows what Hostinger's own domain page listed on 27 October 2026. It isn't a recommendation to buy or avoid; it's a clean example of the gap you should look for at any registrar.

| Extension | Promotional first year | Renews at | Condition |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| .com | $0.01 | $19.99/yr | A 3-year term; the page showed $39.99 due today |
| .net | $11.99 | $17.99/yr | A 2-year term |
| .org | $8.99 | $17.99/yr | No term stated on the page |
| .xyz | $1.99 | $19.99/yr | No term stated on the page |
| .online | $0.99 | $35.99/yr | No term stated on the page |

> From the bench: Look at the .online row. A name advertised at under a dollar renews at $35.99 a year. That's fine for a short campaign and an expensive surprise for a brand you plan to keep.

## Why a $0.01 domain needs a closer look

Promotional prices come with conditions. In the example, the $0.01 .com requires a 3-year term, and the checkout total on the page was $39.99 for that term. That can still be good value if you want three years, but it isn't a one-cent domain.

If a page hides the term, the renewal rate or the transfer price, treat that as a warning sign and read the cart carefully.

- **What you pay today,** for the whole term, including any add-ons ticked by default.
- **The renewal price per year,** after the promotion ends.
- **The transfer-out price,** in case you move later. Hostinger's page listed $9.99 to transfer a .com in, for instance.

## How other registrars price differently

I don't print competitor prices: they move constantly and differ by country. What stays true is the pricing model, and that tells you where to look.

| Model | How it prices | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| At-cost registrars (for example Cloudflare Registrar) | Sells domains at the wholesale price with no markup, so renewals stay low and flat | Extension availability and that you don't need other services bundled |
| Flat-price registrars (for example Porkbun) | Registration, renewal and transfer are priced close together on common extensions | Some extensions still renew higher than their first year |
| Host-bundled registrars | Free or cheap first-year domain with a hosting plan, then the normal renewal rate | The renewal price and whether the free domain is deducted from a refund |
| Large promotional registrars | Very low first-year offers that rise sharply at renewal | Renewal price and add-on upsells at checkout |

> From the bench: An at-cost registrar will usually undercut a promotional one on .com renewal. If your host bundles a free domain, the [free domain guide](https://www.savemores.store/guides/hostinger-free-domain) explains the first-year catch, and the [Namecheap](https://www.savemores.store/compare/hostinger-vs-namecheap) and [GoDaddy](https://www.savemores.store/compare/hostinger-vs-godaddy) comparisons show how those two differ on domains.

## Other costs to check

The registration price isn't the only line on the bill.

- **WHOIS privacy.** Many registrars include it free, and Hostinger says it's free on new domains and transfers for extensions that support it. Confirm at checkout; some registrars charge extra.
- **Transfer price.** Moving a domain away can cost money.
- **Premium domains.** Short or dictionary-word names can be priced as premium names, at hundreds or thousands of dollars, with a high renewal too.
- **Auto-renewal.** It protects you from losing the domain but charges the full renewal rate without a reminder. Put the date in your calendar.
- **Add-ons.** Email, site builders and "domain protection" extras are offered at checkout. Skip what you don't need.

## How to buy a cheap domain safely

Use this order and you avoid most surprises.

1. Choose the extension first. A .com is the easiest to remember and type; cheap extensions like .xyz and .online can suit a side project.
2. Compare the renewal price at two or three registrars, not just the first year.
3. Check that WHOIS privacy is included.
4. Buy only the years you need. You can renew each year.
5. Turn on two-factor sign-in and registrar lock for the account.
6. Keep the domain registration separate from your web host if you might switch hosts later.

## One transfer rule to know

Under ICANN's transfer policy, a newly registered domain generally can't be transferred to another registrar for the first 60 days. You can't register at a bargain price and move away the next week. A transfer usually also adds a year to the registration, so check what the transfer price includes.

## How I compared these

SaveMores is an independent Hostinger referral site. If you buy through a link here we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. That's why a coupon button appears on this page, and it's why I also say where Hostinger is the wrong choice. The [disclosure page](https://www.savemores.store/disclosure) and [how we test](https://www.savemores.store/how-we-test) explain the rest.

The Hostinger figures come from its domain pages on 27 October 2026. Other registrars are described by their pricing model, with no figures quoted. Prices change, so confirm at checkout.

## FAQ

### What is the cheapest domain name?

Promotional prices for extensions like .xyz and .online can be about a dollar or two for the first year. The cheapest over several years depends on the renewal price, which can be many times higher for those extensions.

### Why is my domain renewal more expensive than the first year?

The first-year price is usually a promotion. After it ends, the domain renews at the registrar's regular rate, which is higher.

### Is a free domain with hosting really free?

It's free for the first year on eligible plans and terms. Afterwards it renews at the normal domain price. The free domain guide explains how to claim it and what happens at refund time.

### Can I buy a domain without hosting?

Yes. A domain is a separate product, and you can point it at any web host later.

### Do I need WHOIS privacy?

It hides your personal contact details from public lookups. Several registrars include it free, so there's little reason to pay extra for it.
