AI website builders vs building it yourself: what AI does well and where it falls short
AI website builders can draft a whole site in minutes. Here's what they genuinely do well, where they fall short, and how to use one without ending up with a generic site.

The short answer
- 01An AI website builder turns a short description of your business into a first draft: layout, pages, images and copy, ready to edit.
- 02It's excellent for getting from nothing to a credible small site quickly. It's weak at original writing, unusual layouts and anything a template doesn't cover.
- 03Treat the AI output as a first draft. Rewrite the copy in your own words and replace stock images with real ones before you publish.
- 04If the site needs custom features or will grow into something bigger, start on WordPress, where AI tools help but don't box you in.
What an AI website builder actually does
You answer a few questions: what the business is, who it's for, what style you like. The builder then generates a site: a page structure, a layout, placeholder or stock images, and copy for each section. You edit the result in a normal drag-and-drop editor, and hosting, SSL and a domain are usually bundled.
Hostinger's Website Builder works this way, as do the AI modes in Wix and Squarespace. Hostinger's WordPress plans also include AI tools, but there they help you build a WordPress site rather than replace it.
What AI does well
- Beats the blank page. You go from nothing to a full draft in minutes, which is often the hardest step.
- Sensible structure. It knows a restaurant needs a menu, hours and a map, and a consultant needs services, proof and a contact form.
- Consistent design. Colours, fonts and spacing match across pages without design skills.
- Speed for simple sites. A brochure site, portfolio or landing page can be live the same day.
Where AI falls short
- Generic copy. AI writing sounds like every other AI-written site. It doesn't know your story, your prices or why customers choose you.
- Facts it invents. Generated text can include claims, services or numbers that aren't true for your business. Check every line.
- Stock images. They look polished but anonymous. Real photos of your work, team or premises build far more trust.
- Template limits. Unusual layouts, custom features and integrations are hard or impossible.
- Lock-in. Like any builder, the site lives inside that platform and doesn't move cleanly to another host.
AI builder vs WordPress vs hiring someone
| AI website builder | WordPress (you build it) | Hire a designer/developer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Hours to a day | Days to weeks | Weeks |
| Upfront cost | A hosting plan | A hosting plan, maybe a theme | A project fee plus hosting |
| Skill needed | None | Moderate | None (they do it) |
| Originality | Low until you rewrite it | As much as you put in | High |
| Room to grow | Limited to the builder | Very large | Depends on what's built |
How to use an AI builder without ending up generic
- 1Give it real detail: your services, your area, who your customers are, and what makes you different. Better input means a better draft.
- 2Keep the structure, then rewrite every heading and paragraph in your own words.
- 3Replace stock photos with real ones wherever you can, even good phone photos.
- 4Remove sections you don't need. AI drafts tend to include everything.
- 5Add the details only you know: prices or price ranges, opening hours, real reviews, an honest About page.
- 6Connect your own domain and a matching email address. Why your business needs its own domain and email explains why it matters.
Which should you choose?
Choose an AI builder if you need a simple, credible site soon and don't expect it to need custom features. On Hostinger that's Premium Builder, $2.49/mo on 48-month intro pricing, or Business Builder ($3.49/mo) if you want to sell online.
Choose WordPress if the site will grow, needs specific plugins, or is central to how you make money. Start a blog on Hostinger shows the setup, and Website Builder or WordPress goes deeper on the choice. If you're selling, see WooCommerce vs a website builder.
SaveMores is an independent Hostinger referral site. If you buy through a link here we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. That's why a coupon button appears on this page, and it's why I also say where Hostinger is the wrong choice. The disclosure page and how we test explain the rest.
Questions people ask
Are AI website builders any good?
They're good at producing a solid first draft of a simple site quickly. The copy and images need rewriting and replacing to make the site sound like your business.
Is an AI website builder better than WordPress?
It's faster and easier for simple sites. WordPress is more flexible and better for sites that need specific features or will grow. Many people start with a builder and move to WordPress later.
Can Google tell a site was made with AI?
Google says it ranks content on quality and usefulness, not on how it was produced. Generic, unedited AI copy tends to be thin and similar to other sites, which is why rewriting it helps.
Does Hostinger have an AI website builder?
Yes. Hostinger's Website Builder generates a first draft from a short description, which you then edit with drag and drop. Hosting, SSL and a first-year domain are included.
Do I own a site made with an AI builder?
You own your content, but the site runs on the builder's platform and usually can't be exported to another host as-is. That lock-in is the main trade-off.
Independent site, not Hostinger. Buy through my links and Hostinger pays me a referral fee; your price is the same or lower. How that works.
